Chapter Nine
Ayla slept through the remainder of the morning and most of the afternoon, stirring only slightly from the depths of absolute exhaustion. During these tense hours, the two malefey kept an uneasy vigil, one outside the small cottage, the other inside, and although they did not speak to each other, they repeatedly glared in the other's direction through either the open door or the parlor window. Their mutual dislike was far more than apparent and for more reasons than the simple fact that one was a Celebrant and the other a Dark One.
Satisfied that his Legion would not trespass into the daytide to deliver retribution for his act of defiance in closing, rather than opening, the portal of Ayla's mirror and cheating them out of their pitiless amusement, Gairynzvl sat down on the floor beside the settee where she slept and closed his eyes, weary beyond measure. He had kept a long watch during the previous evening waiting for darkness to fall while protecting her from his Legion by insisting on coming to confront her alone and open the portal. Then he had then performed the difficult magic that closed the portal while struggling with her and blocking his thoughts back to the Legion so they would not immediately realize what he was doing.
Convincing her of his trustworthiness by bearing the full torment of the Light had been even more dangerous than defying his Legion, nearly fatal, but he had succeeded in persuading her. This act had achieved his purpose, yet it was even more useful in gaining her confidence than he initially intended; a truth that had been undeniably revealed in her selfless acts of sacrifice for his sake, not once, but twice. The taxing hours of the night culminating in a battle for his life not with his Legion, but with a Celebrant of the High Faith who was, potentially, even more dangerous than they were, as well as the long hours of standing guard over Ayla while she slept had taken an exacting toll. Nevertheless, he did not trust falling asleep in the presence of a Celebrant, as it was entirely possible that, should he lose himself in slumber, he might awaken in bonds, or worse.
Attempting to rest without losing awareness of his surrounds, he listened intently for any suspicious sounds while allowing his thoughts to cease their fretful spinning and his body to relax. When he finally managed to quiet them, Ayla stirred, turning on the settee for the first time since the morning and reaching out in her sleep to place her small hand lightly upon his broad shoulder. He flinched at the unexpected contact, twisting to look at her curiously, unsure if she had roused herself, but, finding that she remained asleep in spite of her action, he gazed with weary wonder at the delicate blush that warmed her pale cheeks.
Gairynzvl smiled curiously, becoming immediately inquisitive to discover how far her abilities extended while she slept. Reaching without turning round, he returned her
